Google Android terrible! at least for now

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Saw Dr.D’s presentation at Hangzhou last time on Alibaba’s Internet Developer conference. Wanna give Android a try.

Tried every way and many hours googleing. Not able to get Andriod SDK working on my Ubuntu 8.04 Linux system. I’ll wait until it matures…

My friend at google tells me it’s easier to get it working on windows…Google want it be open source, but it runs easier on windows, hum…interesting.

I knew AWT wasn’t right

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

I watched a developer talk show on Microsoft’s website. The interviewee was the danish guy who wrote turbo pascal and delphi. They talked on various tech and non-tech topics. One of the things that caught my attention was that AWT was such a terrible GUI framework for JAVA. Aha. I programmed almost 3 years java back in college. I did a lot of my GUI work with AWT. Back then JAVA was so new and OOP was so attractive that you don’t hear a lot criticism about AWT. But it was such a painful experience. So I got good programmer instinct. I knew AWT wasn’t that right.

Now I have been an embedded software engineer for 3 years. God, I miss JAVA…

Ubuntu trail: highly recommend

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

It’s been 2 years I haven’t done any development under Linux. I’ve been a long time debian user. The debian installation on my Dell Inspiron 510m laptop was 2 years old. So I decided to give it a upgrade to the latest Debian testing.

Download the latest Debian testing image then burn the CD, however my laptop’s screen goes out of oder in the late stage of Debian installation. WTF? I couldn’t believe it. So I have heard Ubuntu for a long time, and I want a linux distribution which works out of the box and have easy package management cause I don’t want to spend time on drivers and dependencies.

I mistakenly downloaded Ubuntu Live CD which is the default option on their website. Be careful to download the desktop or alternative CD to burn:).

Installation was smooth. Everything works after installation. My wifi WPA is supported. Fire Synaptic and get everything installed. Apache, Mysql, PHP, just a few clicks! Software development in Linux is just easier. Everything is designed to work together. My external LCD monitor was automatically recognized when I plug it in.

There is a mirror in China. So software install and upgrade is pretty fast.

Go Ubuntu!

Bill Gate’s last keynote at CES

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Check out the video on the website. Make sure you see the video he created for CES. So funny! When he asked my favorite daily show anchor Jon Stewart to come back to the show, Jon pretended he was on his private jet and about to take off to excuse himself. I can’t help laughing in the office. The sound of the video was not good tough. Who can find a better video for me?

I think he is truly legendary. He will kinda leave a void in the software industry when he leave MS and focus on Bill and Melinda foundation. I mean Steve Ballmer is good, but Bill has changed the world.

He is truly blessed.

btw, I love opensource, but as a person, Bill has many things for young men and entrepreneur wannabes to learn.

The secret of successful technology company

Saturday, December 15th, 2007
  1. The ideaLet’s be clear about this. Ideas are VERY important in technology industry. An idea can change the world. Here are some evidence:
    • Google: Google started at a time when everybody thought: The world does not need yet another search engine. But Google came up with page ranking!
    • Linux: (I made this one up) Linux came at the time when people thought: Why do we need an operating system that support as half the devices as Windows 95 is supporting? And It didn’t have those fancy UI and Icons. But Linux came up with Open Source movement!
    • IE: (I may get lots of fire on this one) Internet Explore came at the time when Netscape Navigator already dominated the market of browsers. But IE came up with bundle with Windows and you can not uninstall it!

Nowadays many people would debate that having a kick-ass idea is less important than having a team to execute an idea well. Some say ideas are like cockroaches. When you see one Web 2.0 company implement one idea, probably you will see hundreds more doing the same thing. This may sounds true during the Internet bubbles in 2001, 2002. I would rather say, doing the right things is more important than doing the things right.
