An interesting conversation today

Friday, December 21st, 2007

A: I probably have invested thousands of dollars in getting anxiety, self-doubt and disappointment.

B: At least, you invested in hope, didn’t you?

A: G….

Key takeaway: There is no guarantee in life,  work hard and hope for the best. Most importantly, enjoy life:D. As the famous Chiense proverb goes: “One Horse Lost May Be a Herd of Them Gained” (塞翁失马, 焉知非福?).  Moreover, patience is virtue.

这个世界上有方便面味道的香水吗?

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

oh yeah, that’s it! 方便面香味的香水。 no kidding。

Sunday@the beach

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

My colleague took me to the beach on Sunday. It was freezing cold. We walked along the beach. Went to see the ferry from the UK. Then had a peak at the fish market. Then walked in the little town. Saw a couple of nice houses. Then we did a bit holiday shopping. Then It became dark outside. So we decide to go to the casino. I didn’t know you need a passport to get in the casino. So we couldn’t get in cause I did not have my passport with me:(. Anyways, this is a quick post, sorry for my casual writing style. Here are some pictures. One thing I noticed. I got fat fast! I’m gonna so going to do more sports when I get back to Shanghai.

p.s. the little town is called Ouistreham, (when I pronounce it 90% French people could understand, which is good)

Reverse culture shock

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Cool video I watched today. Kids born in China then grew up in the west. A few things that really hit me: “Chiense people call America 美国 beautiful land, beautiful country. So when you return from America, you are supposed to be better than them.”, “Over here I feel like an American. In the States I feel like a Chinese”.I only stayed for 3 years in Belgium. I remember when I returned to China after my study. I got quite some reverse culture shocks. But after a while, it’s ok.

The big real estate guy in the video is really cool. He spoke quite the truth, no matter like it or not. Somehow I feel a bit sad. How about you?

The secret of successful technology company

Saturday, December 15th, 2007
  1. The ideaLet’s be clear about this. Ideas are VERY important in technology industry. An idea can change the world. Here are some evidence:
    • Google: Google started at a time when everybody thought: The world does not need yet another search engine. But Google came up with page ranking!
    • Linux: (I made this one up) Linux came at the time when people thought: Why do we need an operating system that support as half the devices as Windows 95 is supporting? And It didn’t have those fancy UI and Icons. But Linux came up with Open Source movement!
    • IE: (I may get lots of fire on this one) Internet Explore came at the time when Netscape Navigator already dominated the market of browsers. But IE came up with bundle with Windows and you can not uninstall it!

Nowadays many people would debate that having a kick-ass idea is less important than having a team to execute an idea well. Some say ideas are like cockroaches. When you see one Web 2.0 company implement one idea, probably you will see hundreds more doing the same thing. This may sounds true during the Internet bubbles in 2001, 2002. I would rather say, doing the right things is more important than doing the things right.

Visit Mt.Saint-Michel

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Mt.Saint-Michel is better than I thought. In a large flat land, you see this big thing right in the middle. I’d say it was impressive.

“Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

I never considered my self as an early adopter (however I am quite adventurous). It just take longer for me to take things or people in. I remember very clearly that my best university professor told me once, that I am not the kind of person, she phrased it quite nicely, who get along well in a short time. I took it as a compliment that friendship with me last long :P.

Anyways, that was just an explanation why I write about Randy Pausch rather late. Regardless of my post, Randy is already world famous and his “Last Lecture” too, “over six million people have viewed the lecture online.” .

On this page you can find more about him. For my friends in China, it’s the best to download his lecture then watch it on the computer, giving the network infrastructure and other Internet problems I can not talk about here.

The reason I mention Randy, is that the Internet here in the apartment is really crappy. This page is what I visit the most often every day. Guess what? Bang! page not found!

Living by myself in France

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

This weekend my two colleagues are heading off to China. I feel fortunate to have them accompany me in the past two weeks. We cook and do shopping together, so we can share the tasks, what’s more, the cost per person is really optimized. Now I need to learn living by myself again in the coming two months. The good news is I am heading to Holland in Xmas week. Yeehaa.

One of the things I really like about France and western Europe is this: nice steak.

I apologize it’s a bit small in this picture. The steak is the brownish looking meat in the middle plate. It’s really easy to prepare and quite tasty hehe:). I hope in the future I can also buy this kind of steak meat in China’s super market.

p.s. two of this size beef steak cost me 3.4 euros which is a bit less than 40 RMBs.
